How to accept online payments in Kosovo

Stripe and PayPal let you pay, but they will not let a Kosovo business get paid. The solutions exist: a virtual POS from your own bank, cash on delivery and bank transfer. This guide covers which one fits and how the store connects to it.

TL;DR

Stripe and PayPal do not let Kosovo businesses receive money. What works: a virtual POS from a local bank (Raiffeisen, ProCredit, BKT, TEB, NLB) for Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay; cash on delivery, still the most trusted; bank transfer; and, for transfers and payment links, an e-money account such as Paysera.

01

Why Stripe and PayPal will not receive money in Kosovo

Stripe is unavailable in Kosovo (and in Albania and Bosnia), and PayPal generally does not offer its services to Kosovo businesses. You may be able to open an account, but you cannot pull the money out into a Kosovo bank.

This stops a lot of owners who assume the only path to online payments is Stripe. The solution for Kosovo is local: Kosovo banks offer card acceptance on the web themselves.

02

The real options at a glance

If you sell inside Kosovo, the strongest combination is a bank virtual POS plus cash on delivery. If you sell to the diaspora, you want a virtual POS that accepts foreign cards plus, for transfers, an e-money account such as Paysera.

Most stores that sell well offer two or three at once. The other half of the job is an online store wired to them correctly.

Bank virtual POS: how you accept cards on the site

The bank gives you a payment gateway, the bridge that sends card data securely, and it plugs into your store's checkout so the customer pays without leaving your site. The providers with live services are Raiffeisen e-Commerce, ProCredit e-Commerce, BKT VPOS and TEB, and the choice depends on which bank holds your business account. Since July 2025, per the CBK, Apple Pay and Google Pay are also live in Kosovo through selected banks.

Before it approves you, the bank requires several things from the site. This is where owners lose weeks: they apply with a site that does not meet the bar and the bank sends it back. We build the site ready for approval, so tell us which bank you have in mind.

  • Registered business and a business bank account
  • Live website with a product catalog and shopping cart
  • Valid SSL certificate, HTTPS on every page
  • 3D Secure at checkout
  • Clear terms, privacy and returns pages

Cash on delivery and bank transfer

Cash on delivery remains the most trusted method for the domestic market and should almost always be offered alongside cards, because a store that drops it loses real sales. Bank transfer and e-banking cover B2B and higher-value orders.

The operational side needs a courier arrangement, a way to track returned orders and a process for orders the customer refuses. A well-built store keeps the order status correct in every case.

05

Selling to the diaspora and international customers

Two things are needed: acceptance of foreign cards and a way to receive money cross-border. A bank virtual POS accepts foreign Visa and Mastercard; for marketplace or freelance-style receipts an e-money account such as Paysera can serve.

Factor in multi-currency display too, while settlement is usually in euros. For Albanian buyers in Germany, Switzerland or Austria this structure gives confidence, and you a real path to the money.

06

Wiring the store to these payments

The payment method is half the job: the store has to be wired to the bank's gateway correctly. That means a secure checkout, callback and return URLs set up properly, an order status that updates when payment clears, 3D Secure redirects, SSL and clear terms pages. If one link is missing, the customer pays and the order stays pending.

A custom-built online store lets the checkout work the way the business needs, while an off-the-shelf platform keeps you inside what it allows. If you are starting out, see how to build a website for the basics and the online store platform guide for the decision. We build the store and integrate the bank gateway end to end.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Stripe in Kosovo to accept payments?

No. Stripe does not support Kosovo for receiving money. Use a local bank virtual POS from Raiffeisen, ProCredit, BKT or TEB instead.

Can a Kosovo business receive money with PayPal?

No. PayPal generally does not offer receiving services to Kosovo businesses. The alternative is a bank virtual POS, alongside cash on delivery and bank transfer.

How do I accept Visa and Mastercard on my website in Kosovo?

Through an e-commerce / virtual POS service from Raiffeisen, ProCredit, BKT or TEB, connected to your store. The bank gives you the gateway that plugs into checkout.

Can I accept Apple Pay and Google Pay in Kosovo?

Yes. Since July 2025 they are available through selected Kosovo banks (per the CBK), via the bank's e-commerce gateway.

What do I need before a bank approves my online card payments?

A registered business, a business account, a live website with a cart and SSL/HTTPS, 3D Secure checkout, and clear terms and returns pages.

Is cash on delivery still worth offering in Kosovo?

Yes. It remains the most trusted method for local customers and should usually be offered alongside cards, so you do not lose sales.

How can I receive payments from customers abroad or in the diaspora?

Through a bank virtual POS that accepts foreign cards; for transfers from abroad your business account or an e-money account such as Paysera is enough.

Do I need a special kind of website to accept online payments?

Yes. It must support a secure checkout (SSL, 3D Secure redirects, order and callback handling) and connect to your bank's gateway. Not every template can.
